The New York State Department of Labor explains that mold sampling is rarely recommended because some mold is always present in air and on surfaces, sampling will almost always find it, and there are no national or state standards to compare the results against.

What an assessor settles in a Glen Cove house on the hill
What a Glen Cove assessment hands you is a map of the moisture: where the growth is, how far the wet material runs, where the water entered and which trade repairs it, set down in a plan the removal firms have to follow. For most of the city the ground is an unlikely culprit. USGS well N 1152, at about 154 feet above sea level, read the water table 104.57 feet below the surface in April 2016, and well N 5250, at 123 feet, read 70.50 feet down.

Glen Cove decisions: shore land, hill, sewer or cesspool
Three things change the visit. If the house is on the low land by the Sound, the creek or the beaches the city names as flood prone, outside water is on the list. If it is on the hill, expect the plan to name a roofer, a plumber or a grading fix. And ask whether the house is on the public sewer. The county says most Glen Cove homes are connected, but that parts of the city still rely on private cesspools or septic systems, and a backup from one is not a job for a sealer or a sump.
Low land or hill
Glen Cove's own plan limits flood-prone land to the shore. Tell the assessor which side of that line the house is on.
Sewer or cesspool
If you are not sure, the property records or a past pump-out invoice will say. Cesspool inspection is its own trade, and the plan names it when it is needed.
Owner or tenant
Nearly half of Glen Cove homes are rented. Tenants: put it to the landlord in writing, with dates, as the first step.
Is your Glen Cove house on the shore land or the hill?
Say which, and where the damp shows. We pass it to an independent assessor, and you owe nothing for asking.

Glen Cove questions before an assessment
My basement is damp but the house is nowhere near the water. Is that possible?
Very. With the water table 70 feet or more below the uphill wells, a damp basement is usually fed from above ground: a gutter, the slope of the yard, a leaking line or sweating pipes. The assessor finds which one.
Will the assessor take samples to prove it is mold?
Rarely. The state labor department notes that sampling almost always finds some mold and there is no standard to compare it with. The written plan is the useful part.
